Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, was born in Long Beach California. DuVernay had a close relationship with her Aunt Denise and her mother, who pushed DuVernay to become creative and attracted by the arts. Her aunt was a registered nurse who worked shifts at night so that she could commit all daytime hours to reading, art or theater as well as other activities. DuVernay enjoyed the film West Side Story, which she taught her. DuVernay was taught by her the power of art as an effective tool for social change. DuVernay had an aunt who was knowledgeable about society and taught her how to utilize art as a method of expressing herself. DuVernay lived in Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born, and raised. Her father recalled the civil rights protests on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the local town of Selma Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama were later the inspiration to make a film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay graduated with a graduation certificate from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she earned certificates in English as well as African American Studies. As a student DuVernay started to become interested in producing television journalism. She started as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalls being commissioned to look over the residence of one of the jurors of the jury and take a look at their trash. Her work left her dissatisfied with journalism, and she decided to switch careers into the publicity industry. DuVernay got a job right from college to be an assistant publicist in one of the smaller studios. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. Her agency launched a number of networks for promotion and lifestyle such as Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
